Sen. Brown: American flags should be American made
WASHINGTON — If Sen. Sherrod Brown had his way, there is one thing that should never bear a “Made in China” tag, and that’s the American flag.
Under current law, the American flags purchased by the federal government must be made 50 percent from American-made materials.
A bill from Brown, D-Ohio, that unanimously passed the Senate late Wednesday would require them to be entirely produced with American-made materials.
“It’s outrageous to think that we’d import materials for our most treasured of patriotic symbols,” Brown said.
He added that while requiring American flags purchased by the government to be 100 percent made with American materials is symbolic in nature, it also would produce a number of jobs.
